Tiger Sharks, Aliwal Shoal & Sodwana Bay

Tour Description:
This Dive Expedition takes us to unique South African Dive Destinations. The dive sites visited fuse the best of 2 opposing currents. The warm Agulhas meets the cold Benguella current mixing up an array of tropical and cold water marine life. This occurrence thus brings with it a variety of Sharks. Sodwana Bay is well known for its array of colourful tropical fish and Aliwal Shoal for the Ragged Tooth and Tiger Sharks as well as a few interesting Wrecks. The Protea Banks are famous for their deep shark dives. Hammerhead, Ragged Toothed, Bull, Tiger, Copper, Thresher, Bronze Whaler and Black Tip Sharks can be seen on one dive making it the world’s best baitless, cageless shark dive spot in the world. A flexible attitude and an open mind can only contribute to the experience of a life time never to be repeated.
Itinerary:
Day 1-4: Sodwana Bay -We arrive at Durban International Airport and immediately set off for our first dive destination at Sodwana Bay. We arrive late afternoon and familiarise our self with our dive centre. The next 2 days are spent doing 4 dives in these tropical waters. Depths vary from 9 -38 meters boasting diverse corals, rocky overhangs & caves massive amount of fishes and invertebrates, the rare starry moray, red anemone, green tree coral and other amazing life. Day 4- 7: Aliwal Shoal – After our last dive in the morning we drive back south. Here we spend 4 nights having the opportunity to experience the best of both currents on a variety of dives. The 3 days will allow for a combination of 5 shark, wreck and reef dives. Our first Tiger Shark dives will afford us the rare opportunity to dive cageless with the Tiger Sharks. This unique dive will help us gain incite into these very misunderstood animals. The wreck dive takes us to The Produce, a Norwegian Bulk Molasses tanker, which struck Aliwal Shoal on the NE Pinnacles in 1974. Big game fish such as Salmon, Kingfish, Brindle Bass share the wreck with Lionfish and many colourful tropical species. Reef such as Cathedral, The pinnacles and Raggie Cave can also be visited.
Day 8-10: Protea Banks – For our last 2 nights we head further south. Here we have the opportunity for 2 dives with any one or more of the above mentioned shark species. The dives are not done in a cage and the sharks are not baited. The Protea Banks are on the natural migratory route of these sharks and the season for these animals is between May and October. After our exciting time in this shark territory we head back to Durban. Here we spend our last night enjoying the Beach Front of the 3rd largest city of South Africa before flying back home.
